Rudolf Nureyev fled to the West in the early 1960s and from then on appeared on the major stages of (Western) Europe: London, Paris, New York and Milan. In 1966 he brought his fascinating choreography of Tchaikovsky's »Sleeping Beauty« to the stage at La Scala in Milan. Of Marus Petipa's original choreography, which he had learned at Kirov, Nureyev retained the extraordinary purity of expression, but complemented it with significantly more drama and theatricality. The result reveals the psychological nuances of the protagonists and turns the stage characters into believable characters.

In 2019, the ballet of the Teatro alla Scala brought Nureyev's epochal choreography back to the stage. Oscar winner Franca Squarciapino was responsible for the stage design. Polina Semionova and Timofej Andrijashenko in the leading roles were acclaimed by the press.
